AMERICAN TREE SPARROW

AMERICAN TREE SPARROW – (Spizelloides arborea) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The American Tree Sparrow has a rufous cap and a brown back with streaks, and a light grey breast with a dark spot in the middle. Wings are brown and grey with two white bars. Bill is grey on top, yellow under. Legs and feet are grey. Sexes are similar. Bird is about 15 cm (6 inches) long.

NAME: ‘Sparrow’ derives from Anglo-Saxon ‘Spearwa’, which means ‘flutterer’.  Latin genus name ‘Spizelloides’ means ‘similar to a little finch’, and ‘arborea’ means ‘tree’.
HABITAT: Tundra, boreal forest near tree line.
DIET: Feeds on insects, flowers in summer, berries, seeds in the winter
NESTING: Nests on the ground or low in tree thickets. Around four or five light blue eggs are laid, incubated by the female. Chicks fed by both parents.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeds in the northern parts of Canada (including Akaska). During migration is seen in the remainder of Canada. Winters in the contiguous USA except the west coast.

ON PEI: Does not breed on Prince Edward Island, uncommon during migration.
CONSERVATION: Population stable, not at risk.
