BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER – (Setophaga virens) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Black-throated Green Warbler breeding male has a yellow head with horizontal bands, and a black throat with black bands down each side of the breast. The back is olive-green and the under parts are creamy-yellow. The non-breeding male and the female have no black, which is replaced by yellow, and the black bands on the sides of the breast are fainter. This bird measures about 10 cm (4.5 inches) long.
VOICE: https://www.xeno-canto.org/species/Setophaga-virens – This warbler can easily be identified by its calls, and sings all day long.
NAME: Warblers are thus called because of their generally melodious songs. The Latin genus name ‘setophaga’ means ‘moth eating’, and the Latin species name ‘virens’ refers to the bird’s green plumage.
HABITAT: Mainly the conifer forest
DIET: Insects, sometimes caught on the fly. Forage mostly in the tree tops.
NESTING: The nest is built in a tree close to the ground. Around three or four eggs are laid, incubated by the female. Both parents feed the chicks, first by the female. This bird is a frequent victim of the parasitic Brown-Headed Cowbird in some areas.
DISTRIBUTION: The breeding range covers eastern North America. Wintering grounds are located in Central America and the Caribbean.
DISTRIBUTION MAP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-throated_green_warbler#/media/File:Dendroica_virens_map.svg
ON PEI: The black-throated green warbler breeds on Prince Edward Island and is common in spring and summer.
CONSERVATION: The nest parasitism of this species doesn’t seem to impact its population levels, and it is not considered at risk currently.
