NAME:The English name ‘Boreal’ refers to the bird’s habitat, and ‘Chickadee’ is an onomatopoeia for the bird’s signature song. The Latin genus name ‘Poecile’ is from ancient Greek and means ‘colorful’. As for the Latin species name ‘hudsonicus’, it means from ‘Hudson’s Bay’.
HABITAT: Coniferous forests near water.
DIET: Seeds and insects.  Attracted to bird feeders.
NESTING: The nest is built in a tree cavity. About five to eight eggs are laid, incubated by the female, who also is the parents that feeds the chicks at first.
DISTRIBUTION: The boreal chickadee is a year-round resident in most of Canada up to the tree line, and also along the northern USA close to Canada.

ON PEI: The boreal chickadee is a year-round resident on Prince Edward Island and is fairly common.
CONSERVATION: The population of this chickadee appears to have increased in the last few decades and the species is currently not considered at risk.
NOTES: Chickadees are known to hoard food, whether seeds or insects. In order to extract the kernel from large seeds such as sunflower, chickadees hold them between their feet and hammer at the seeds with their bill.
