CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER – (Setophaga pensylvanica) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Chestnut-sided Warbler breeding male has a green-yellow crown, a white throat and under parts, a streaked grey-brown back, and chestnut-colored sides (hence the English name). The breeding female has duller colors with barely any chestnut-colored sides. The bird is around 12 cm (5 inches) long.

NAME: Warblers are thus called thanks to their generally melodious songs. The Latin genus name ‘Setophaga’ means ‘eating moths’, and the species name ‘pennsylvanica’ likely refers to the location where the first specimen was found.
HABITAT: Forest edges and scrub land along fields and clearings.
DIET: Forages for insects and other invertebrates on leaves.
NESTING: The nest is an open cup placed in a shrub close to the ground. Between three and five creamy eggs are laid, incubated by the female. Both parents feed the chicks. Nest frequently parasitized by the Brown-headed Cowbird.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeding range includes southeast Canada and northeast USA, winters mainly in Central America.

ON PEI: The chestnut-sided warbler breeds on Prince Edward Island and is fairly common in the spring and summer.
CONSERVATION: This warbler actually seems to benefit from timber harvesting, as it prefers second-growth forests. It is not considered at risk at the present time.
