OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER – (Contopus cooperi) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION:The Olive-sided Flycatcher has streaked brown-olive flanks, which join at the breast. The top parts are brown and the belly white. Bill and legs are grey, tail is short. Head large relative to body size. Sometimes a crest is visible. Sexes are similar. Bird is around 20 cm (7 inches) long.

NAME: The Latin name ‘Contopus’ means short feet and ‘cooperi’ refers to James Cooper, an American ornithologist.
HABITAT: This flycatcher can be found in regenerated coniferous forests following cutting or burning, particularly in mountainous areas.
DIET: As is typical for a flycatcher, the olive-sided species hunts for insects by perching at the top of trees from which they have a vantage viewpoint. They then catch them on the fly, and return to their perch, where they stand in an upright position.
NESTING: The nest is a cup-like structure built on a tree branch. An average of three light beige eggs are laid, which are incubated by the female. The male meanwhile defends its territory by singing. Both parents feed the chicks.
DISTRIBUTION: The overall breeding area of this species covers the Canadian boreal forest, also Alaska and parts of western USA. It winters in the northwest region of South America.

ON PEI: The Olive-sided flycatcher breeds on Prince Edward Island, and is thought to be fairly common in the summer.
CONSERVATION: The olive-sided flycatcher has experienced a steady decline in its population over the last few decades. One factor would be habitat loss, both on its breeding and wintering grounds. It is therefore considered as threatened by COSEWIC (see reference below).
