ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK

ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK(Pheucticus ludovicianus) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Rose-breasted Grosbeak male has a large carmine red reversed triangle on the breast, hence its name. This  patch extends in a narrow band down the middle of the breast. It has black upper parts and white under parts. The wings have white bands. The large conical bill is light-colored and the legs and feet are grey. The female is brown above with brown and light-colored bands on the head and across the eyes. The under parts are creamy with light brown steaks across the breast. It is about 20 cm (8 inches) long.

NAME: The English name refers to the bird’s large bill and the male breast color. The Latin genus name ‘Pheucticus’ means ‘painted with cosmetics’, in reference again to the male breast color. As for the Latin species name ‘ludovicianus’, it means ‘of Louisiana, where the first specimen was found.
HABITAT: Deciduous forests in the summer, parks, plantations in the winter.
DIET: Forages near top of deciduous trees for insects. Also feeds on seeds and berries. Attracted to bird feeders.
NESTING: Nest built on tree branch. Three to four light blue eggs are laid, incubated by both parents, who also both feed the chicks.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeds in the mid-latitudes of Canada and the eastern half of the USA. Winters mainly in Central America.

ON PEI: Breeds on Prince Edward Island and common.
CONSERVATION: Widespread and common, not at risk.
NOTES:  This bird is part of the Cardinal family.
