SUMMER TANAGER (Piranga rubra) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Summer Tanager adult male is all red except for the wings and tail, which are reddish brown. Females are yellow-olive with green-brown wings and tail. Conical bill, legs and feet are grey-brown. Eyes are black. Bird length is about 15 cm (6 inches).

NAME: ‘Tanager’ stems from ‘Tangara’, from Brazilian Tupi and refers to an unknown bird. Latin genus name ‘Piranga’ is also from Brazilian Tupi. ‘Summer’ was given to this species to differentiate it from the Cardinal (Choate). Latin species name ‘rubra’ means ‘red’.
HABITAT: Open forests with oaks.
DIET: Forages high in tree canopy for insects, sometimes caught on the fly. Also feeds on berries.
NESTING: Nest is a bowl-shaped structure built in a tree. Around three light blue-green eggs are laid, incubated by female. Chicks fed by both parents.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeds in southeast USA (mainly) and northern Mexico. Winters southern Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and northwest South America.

ON PEI: Does not breed on Prince Edward Island, sightings occasional in the spring.
CONSERVATION: Population widespread and relatively stable, currently not at risk.
