YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER – (Empidonax flaviventris) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Yellow-bellied Flycatcher has yellowish under parts (hence the name) with grey flanks. Upper parts are grey-olive wings black with two narrow white bars. Narrow and pointed bill is grey on top and reddish under. Legs are grey. It has a white eye ring. Sexes are similar. Bird length around 12 cm (5 inches).

NAME: English name relates to bird’s color and diet behavior. Latin genus name ‘Empidonax’ translates for ‘king of the gnats’. Latin species name ‘flaviventris’ means ‘yellow belly’.
HABITAT: Humid coniferous forest.
DIET: Catches insects on the fly from a tree or pole perch, then returns to perch. Stand upright while perched. Also feeds on spiders, seeds and berries.
NESTING: Builds its nest on the ground in a sheltered location. Three to four white eggs are laid, incubated by the female. Chicks fed by both parents.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeding range includes most of boreal Canadian forest and northeast part of the USA. Winters in Mexico and Central America. Latecomer from migration.

ON PEI: Breeds on Prince Edward Island, fairly common in the summer.
CONSERVATION: Population appears stable, around 14 million, not at risk.
