BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER – (Setophaga fusca) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Blackburnian Warbler is the only New World warbler with a bright orange throat in the breeding male. The head crown is brown, bordered with yellow bands. The back is grey and the under parts white with a yellow rump. It has two white bands on the wings. The female looks like a washed out version of the male where the orange is replaced with yellow. The bird is about 10 cm (5 inches) long.

NAME: The bird was named after Anna Blackburne, a British naturalist of the 1700s. Warblers are thus called thanks to their generally melodious songs. The Latin genus name ‘setophaga’ means ‘moth eater’ and the Latin species name ‘fusca’ means ‘brown’.
HABITAT: Boreal forest.
DIET: Insects and other invertebrates in the higher parts of trees.
NESTING: The nest is an open cup structure usually built in the higher branches of a tree. Around two to five white eggs are laid, incubated by the female. Chicks are fed by both parents.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeding range includes the eastern half of Canada and part of eastern USA. The bird migrates to northern South America for the winter.

ON PEI: Breeds on Prince Edward Island, fairly common in the spring and summer.
CONSERVATION: Population around 12 million, appears stable and not currently at risk. One main threat however is loss of habitat from forest destruction.
