YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER – (Setophaga dominica) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Yellow-throated Warbler breeding male has a grey head and back with black wings and tail. Wings have two white bars. Head has a white band above the eye, which is black. There is a black patch below the eye that extends down each side of throat. Throat and breast are yellow, under parts are white and sides have dark streaks. Bill is black, legs and feet are grey. Non-breeding male and female have duller colors. Bird length is about 13 cm (5 inches).

NAME: ‘Warbler’ means ‘to sing with trills and quavers’. Latin genus name ‘Setophaga’ means ‘to eat moths’, in reference to the bird’s diet. Latin species name ‘dominica’ means ‘of San Domingo’.
HABITAT: Forests.
DIET: Forages for insects by creeping along branches.
NESTING: Nest is an open cup built high in a tree. Generally four light grey eggs are laid, incubated by female. Chicks likely fed by both parents.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeding range is located in southeast USA (except Florida). Winters in Florida, along the east coasts of Mexico and Central America, and in the Caribbean.

ON PEI: Does not breed on Prince Edward Island, sightings listed as ‘accidental’ (fall and winter) so far. See note below on bird vagrancy.
CONSERVATION: Population is increasing and expanding northward, not at risk.
Vagrancy: In biology this means an animal going way outside its normal range. For birds, this can happen when there are storms and they get blown off course. On other times, the bird simply wanders in a different direction than usual. Here’s an article about vagrancy in birds.
