ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (Oreothlypis celata) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Orange-crowned Warbler male has a barely visible orange crown (hence Latin species name). Upper parts are olive grey, under parts are yellowish with some light streaking. Bill and legs are grey, eyes are black. Females are duller. Bird length is around 12 cm (5 inches).

NAME: ‘Warbler’ refers to the generally melodious songs of those birds. Latin genus name ‘Oreothlypis’ means ‘small mountain bird’. Latin species name ‘celata’ means ‘hidden’, referring to the head crown.
HABITAT: Shrubby areas of the boreal forest.
DIET: Insects, berries and nectar.
NESTING: Nest is built on the ground or in a low shrub in a well-sheltered area. Around five creamy eggs are laid, incubated by the female. Chicks fed by both parents.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeds in boreal Canadian forest and Alaska, and parts of the USA Rockies. Winters along west coast and in southeast USA, also in Mexico except Yucatan and northern mountains region.

ON PEI: Does not breed on Prince Edward Island, sightings occasional in the fall.
CONSERVATION: Population would number around 80 million, currently not considered at risk.
