PHILADELPHIA VIREO
PHILADELPHIA VIREO – (Vireo philadelphicus) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Philadelphia Vireo is a small passerine with grey-olive upper parts and light yellow under parts. It has a dark grey crown with a light grey stripe above the eye, and a dark one across the eye, which is black. The bill and legs are grey. Sexes are similar. It measures approximately 13 cm (5 inches) long.

NAME: The English name ‘Vireo’ means ‘green’, and ‘Philadelphia’ refers to the location where the first specimen was found.
HABITAT: Deciduous forests and park lands.
DIET: Forages in the canopy for insects, also feeds on berries.
NESTING: Nest built in a tree. Three or four white eggs are laid, incubated by both parents. Chicks fed by both parents.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeds in much of the Canadian boreal forest east of the Rockies. During migration can be found in eastern USA. Winters in southern Mexico and Central America.

ON PEI: Breeds on Prince Edward Island but rare.
CONSERVATION: Population appears stable, not a cause for concern.
