TENNESSEE WARBLER
TENNESSEE WARBLER – (Oreothlypis peregrina) – (See images below)
DESCRIPTION: The Tennessee Warbler male has a medium grey head and olive green back and wings. Under parts light grey. There is a white eye ring with a black stripe in the middle. Bill sharp and grey, feet also grey. Females and juveniles are washed out replicas of male. Length is about 10 cm (4 inches).

NAME: English name given by American ornithologist Alexander Wilson, after finding an individual along the banks of the Cumberland River in Tennessee. ‘Warbler’ means ‘to sing with trills’. Latin genus name ‘Oreothlypis’ means ‘mountain’ and ‘a small bird’. Latin species name ‘peregrina’ means ‘wanderer’.
HABITAT: Coniferous forest.
DIET: Insects on trees, especially spruce budworm.
NESTING: Nest placed on or near the ground. Between four and six white eggs are laid, incubated by the female. Number of eggs fluctuates with outbreaks of spruce budworm.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeds in the boreal forests of Canada. Migrates through USA and east Mexico. Winters in Central America, the Caribbean, and the northern part of South America.

ON PEI: Breeds on Prince Edward Island, fairly common in spring and summer.
CONSERVATION: Population levels fluctuate with outbreaks of spruce budworm (hence the species Latin name), but widespread and common, not at risk.
NOTES: The Tennessee warbler is a small passerine bird part of the New World warbler family.
